Hatto provided an easy read, and I appreciated the lengthy contextual information in the appendices. This side of the story compares and contrasts in an interesting manner with The Iliad. There is a brief alarming moment early in the poem where Siegfried bluntly tells the alarmed Eel that he intends to take their territory, a Hitler-like moment.
But the English at least the Oxford edition is far too unpoetic. I’ve rarely read anything so boring, which is weird considering the wee bits of action are actually quite interesting. There’s nothing wrong with this having a depressing cantag.

We are told that Siegfried once fought a dragon, but this happened before the story began. Here’s a story that’s flawed in every respect, yet manages to be a fairly endearing read–if you are interested in mythology, that is. Nonetheless, this translation A. That is also the point, this edition made a real story out of the rhyme verses. Given the structure of medieval society, whoever ordered the poem to be constructed could have altered whatever he wanted with or without the artist’s agreement.
I’m just going to have to keep an eye out for other, surviving versions, as it seems many other nordic sagas mention the story. Even then, many “knights” won’t take it because they’re pissing themselves in fear of Hagen, Volker, and the other Burgundians. But the translation of the epos was. On the other hand, I did love the plot of the first part.
